― Caitlin Moran, How to Be a Woman
I think someone's sense of fashion can change. You don't always have to be "preppy" or "grunge" because that's what people normally see you as. I am a fan of changing my style often because I have different moods and want to wear different things. So here are some inspirations for different styles!
Grunge
Grunge (noun): a style or fashion derived from a movement in rock music, characterized by unkempt clothing
Elements: Distressed denim, cut-offs, plaid, floral dresses, combat boots, jackets, oversized clothing, leather jackets, black tights, round sunglasses.
Style Icons: Courtney Love, Alicia Silverstone
Preppy
Preppy (noun); A style associated with that of a preparatory high school.
Elements: Bright/pastel colors, crew neck sweaters, collared shirts, belts, button downs, khakis, large-faced watches, seersucker print, boat shoes, penny loafers.
Style Icons:
Real Life: Jackie Kennedy, Kate Middleton, Gwyneth Paltrow
TV Shows: Blair Waldorf (Gossip Girl), Spencer Hastings (Pretty Little Liars)
Bohemian
Bohemian (noun): a person, as an author or a artist, who acts and lives free of regard to conventional rules and practices
Elements: Maxi skirts, ankle boots, headwraps/hairbands, knit sweaters, sandals, floppy hats, tunics, earthy jewelry, vests, tassels, fringe, flared jeans, floral prints, scarves, lace.
Style Icons: Vanessa Hudgens, Stevie Nicks, Mary-Kate Olsen
Punk
Punk (noun): a style or movement characterized by the adoption of aggressively
unconventional and often bizarre or shocking clothing, hairstyles,
makeup, etc., and the defiance of social norms of behavior, usually
associated with punk rock musicians and fans.
Elements: leather, skinny jeans, studs, ripped denim, chains, graphic tees, motorcycle boots/military boots, black, skulls.
Style Icons: Joan Jett, Blondie
Vintage
Vintage (adjective): representing the high quality of past time.
Elements: Okay so this is kind of hard because there are many different decades you can pull elements from. Here are some examples:
20's: Drop waists, shift dresses, pearls, fringe.
50's: peter pan collars, full skirts, shirt dresses.
70's: Bell bottom jeans, tie-dye, jumpsuits, platform shoes.
80's: Spandex, large sweaters, bright colors, tights, legwarmers.
Icons: Varies from decade to decade
I think that I'll try incorporating these styles into my daily outfits and I hope you are inspired to do so, too!
